TV
There are different kinds of flat screen TVs available, including LED and OLED. What is the difference between the two? Well it’s kind of similar to having to choose between LED and Plasma back in the day, LED offers better value for money and a wider choice of screen sizes. OLED on the other hand is more expensive but is considered to have the best picture quality.

OLED is however more expensive than an LED of a similar size, and OLEDs aren’t usually as bright as LEDs, which may be a problem if you watch your TV in a light room. This technology can be prone to an image retention. This is where a faint impression of static parts of a picture can stick on the screen. It is unlikely to be permanent and fades quite quickly.
TV Size
First consider how far away you will be sitting from your TV, screen sizes range from a small 15 inch to plonk in the kitchen up to a mammoth 85 inch monster to be the centrepiece of your home cinema system.
A common rule of thumb is that the ideal viewing distance for a flat screen TV is around 1.5 to 4 times the diagonal size of your screen using these figures we can do either of the following.

Estimate the viewing distance in our room and use that to calculate an ideal screen size.

TV Resolution:
There are presently three main screen resolutions to select from:
- 720p: 1280 x 720 pixels – aka HD Ready
- 1080p: 1920 x 1080 pixels – aka Full HD
- 2160p: 3840 x 2160 pixels – aka 4K / Ultra HD / SUHD
For 4k to be useful you will need to watch 4k content, this can be streamed by the following:
- An Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player
- 4K Content from Online platforms
- Using Games consoles like Xbox One X or PS4 Pro. You can of course watch regular content on it too, but it’s not true 4k.
